The Dadaab refugee camp, in Garissa County, Kenya, opened in 1991, when many people were forced to flee Somalia due to civil conflict. The conflict and continued flow of refugees migration drastically changed the environment of Dadaab Town. Almost thirty years later, there are still almost 200,000 refugees living in Dadaab.
In 2018, a group of refugees and local Kenyans were trained as online freelancers in Dadaab. As they started to find work as individual freelancers, they soon recognized an opportunity to come together to pool their skills, expertise and resources to be more effective freelancers. And so, the Dadaab Freelancing Collective Agency was created.
The agency currently has 35 members, a mix of refugees from the Dadaab refugee camp and local Kenyans from Dadaab town.
