The Dadaab Collective, a group of digital freelancers based in Kenya's northeastern region, recently embarked on a study tour of the country's thriving tech scene. The tour, organized by the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) and EMobilis, took the collective members to some of Nairobi's most innovative tech hubs, including the Jacaranda Hotel, Gearbox, Adept, and the Kenya National Archives. The experience was eye-opening, providing the collective members with practical skills, knowledge, and inspiration to build successful careers in digital freelancing.


At the Jacaranda Hotel, the collective members had the opportunity to meet with experienced digital workers and guest speakers, who shared their expertise on branding, networking, and marketing in the digital freelancing industry. The speakers emphasized the importance of building a strong personal brand and leveraging social media platforms to showcase their skills and expertise. The collective members were able to gain valuable insights into the industry from the perspective of established professionals and feel inspired and armed with practical tools to implement in their digital businesses.

The tour then moved to Gearbox, an innovation hub that provides access to advanced tools and resources for entrepreneurs, inventors, and engineers. The collective members were impressed by the state-of-the-art equipment available, including 3D printers, laser cutters, and CNC machines. They had the opportunity to work on their projects and meet with resident entrepreneurs, who shared their experiences of launching startups and building successful businesses.


Adept, a software development company that specializes in mobile and web applications, was the next destination. Here, the collective members gained insight into the intricacies of the industry, including contract negotiation, client management, and project delivery. They also had the opportunity to learn to code and design their mobile app prototypes, guided by experienced professionals.
